EFOTT – the summer when there are no questions, only stories

EFOTT. A name that for many people means the first „real” festival experience after freshers’ camp. And for others, it’s a series of summers when they always vowed to „hold back a bit this year” – and then failed. But it’s really no big deal. EFOTT is not about abstinence. It’s about transcendence, about freedom, about letting it all go. It’s about a huge community experience that lasts for days, where music, night, and the shores of Lake Venice merge into one memory.

For our editorial team, EFOTT is a special stop every year. We don’t go for the music – although there’s no shortage of that either. And not necessarily for the programmes – although during the day there are workshops, sports competitions, talks, waterfront yoga and civic exhibitors. The real essence of EFOTT is community. It is a place where everyone is a little more indulgent. Even with your own boundaries.

The atmosphere? It’s like a giant freshers’ camp – only here, no one will tell you you’re singing the chorus too loudly at 4am. One night you’re having a beer on the lakeside with old friends, the next you find yourself at a spontaneous tent party with strangers who will be long gone in two hours. There’s something purely instinctive about EFOTT: nothing is too serious, nothing is too final, but everything is very real.

The music lineup brings the best of the Hungarian mainstream year after year – Halott Pénz, ByeAlex, Krúbi, Beton.Hofi, Follow the Flow, Punnany Massif, and the list goes on. Everybody knows the lyrics, everybody moves together – EFOTT has a beat of its own that lasts from 7pm to 5am, and once you get into the swing of it, it’s impossible not to drift with it. And yes, the organisers are bringing in more and more international acts, but this one has always been about Hungarian music first and foremost. It’s about what we understand together, what we feel together, and what we shout together towards the stage.

A special mention must go to the venue: Lake Venice, an arm’s length from the capital, yet far enough away to forget what the morning tram was like. During the day, beach, swimming, water biking, ice cream, or just relaxing in the shade. And if you’re a little more tired in the evening, the sunset by the lake is just the thing to recharge your dead internal battery.

EFOTT is the festival where people don’t want to please others – they want to please each other. Not too many trends, too many poses, too much pressure to conform. Everyone here knows that it’s not really the line-up that counts – it’s who you dance to it with. The shared experiences, the unspoken moments, the smell of summer in your hair.

And even though every year we say „we’ve outgrown it this year”, somehow we’re still there. Because EFOTT is not an age, it’s a state. A tiredness that becomes a memory, a blurred dawn, a kind look in a beer tent. A desire to be there again, even if only for a day. Because everyone who matters is there.
